Training

Our Trainers
Horse training and horse racing revolved around Juan Heredia for
his entire life. Juan grew up on a cattle ranch. As a boy he
challenged his friends to match races. He tried his luck as a
jockey but was over the weight limit in no time, so he spend
most of his adult life as an exercise rider on Bay Area tracks.
In 2002 he started on the Daehling Ranch breaking horses and
correcting other trainers problem horses. He seems to know a
trick for every vice and individual need of a horse. Juan never
gives up on a problem horse.
The Daehling Ranch has a 3/8th mile sand covered, all weather
track with an inside and outside rail and a 4 horse starting
gate. In addition the ranch has a large covered round pen, a hot
walker, wash rack and a special carpet covered hitching post. We
also have large thoroughbred sized stalls and individual turnout
paddocks with good footing.
Luis Pena is Juan’s assistant trainer, who enjoys learning
Juan’s tricks of the trade. It usually takes Juan and Luis 45 to
60 days from ground breaking till the horse will gallop around
the track, walk through the starting gate and is ready to go to
the big world.
